Cups to grams converter (by ingredient)

Convert cups, tablespoons and teaspoons to grams or ounces (and back) for 50 common baking and cooking ingredients.

A cup is a volume, a gram is a mass, so the conversion depends on what is in the cup: a US cup of all-purpose flour weighs about 120 g, a cup of granulated sugar 198 g and a cup of honey 336 g. Choose the ingredient, enter cups, tablespoons, teaspoons or millilitres, and read grams or ounces, or go the other way to turn a metric recipe into cups.

Weights per cup come from the King Arthur Baking ingredient weight chart, which assumes flour is fluffed, spooned into the cup and levelled; where the chart gives a smaller measure, the value is scaled to a full cup (21 g per tablespoon of honey is 336 g per cup, since a cup holds 16 tablespoons). Plain whole-milk yogurt (245 g per cup) is from USDA FoodData Central, and water uses its density of about 1 g/mL. The full list with sources is on this page.

The US customary cup is 236.59 mL (16 US tablespoons of 14.79 mL); Australian, New Zealand, Canadian and many UK recipes use a 250 mL metric cup with 15 mL tablespoons, about 5.7% larger. Switch the cup size to match your recipe. Weights still vary with how you fill the cup, humidity and brand (flour scooped straight from the bag can weigh 20% more), so weigh when precision matters.

How to use it

  1. Pick the ingredient; the list is grouped into flours, sugars, fats, liquids, syrups, grains, baking basics and nuts.
  2. Choose the direction: cups and spoons to weight, or weight to cups and spoons.
  3. Enter the amount and pick the units; set the cup size to US (236.6 mL) or metric (250 mL).
  4. Read the result, and use the table for ¼, ⅓, ½, ⅔, ¾, 1 and 2 cups of the same ingredient.

Frequently asked questions

How many grams is 1 cup of flour?

About 120 g for all-purpose, bread or cake flour measured by spooning and levelling (King Arthur Baking). Scooping directly with the cup packs it and can give 140 g or more.

How many grams is 1 cup of sugar?

About 198 g of granulated sugar, 213 g of packed brown sugar and 113 g of unsifted confectioners' sugar.

How many grams is a tablespoon of butter?

About 14.2 g: a US cup of butter (2 sticks) is 227 g and a cup is 16 tablespoons.

Why does my recipe say 1 cup = 250 g?

That is true only for water-like liquids in a metric (250 mL) cup. For dry ingredients the weight depends on density, which is why this converter asks for the ingredient.

Are these values exact?

No. They are typical published weights. The volume conversions are exact (a US cup is 236.588 mL), but the ingredient weights vary with packing and brand, so treat them as good kitchen estimates.
