The converter uses the Umm al-Qura calendar, Saudi Arabia's official tabular calendar, as implemented in the Unicode ICU library that ships with modern browsers (calendar "islamic-umalqura"). Umm al-Qura months are fixed in advance by astronomical rules, which is why it is used for official dates in Saudi Arabia. The supported range is 1343 to 1500 AH (August 1924 to November 2077).
The actual start of months with religious significance, especially Ramadan, Shawwal and Dhu al-Hijjah, is announced after moon sighting and can differ from the Umm al-Qura date by a day. Other countries may also follow their own sighting or calculation, so for Eid and Ramadan rely on your local authority's announcement.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my country's Ramadan start on a different day?
Umm al-Qura is a calculated calendar. Many countries, and Saudi Arabia itself for religious months, confirm the new month by sighting the crescent moon, which can make the month start a day later (or earlier) than the calculated date.
Why do some Hijri months have 29 days and others 30?
A lunar month averages about 29.53 days, so months alternate between 29 and 30 days depending on when the new moon falls. In Umm al-Qura the length of each month is fixed in advance; the converter tells you which it is.
Why is day 30 rejected for some months?
Because that month has only 29 days in the Umm al-Qura calendar, so the date does not exist. The 30th of the previous month or the 1st of the next one is probably what you need.
How much shorter is the Hijri year?
About 354 or 355 days, roughly 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year. That is why Ramadan moves about 11 days earlier each Gregorian year and cycles through all seasons in about 33 years.
Is this the same as the tabular "Islamic civil" calendar?
No. The civil (arithmetical) Islamic calendar follows a fixed 30-year cycle of leap years, while Umm al-Qura is based on astronomical calculations for Makkah. The two can differ by one or two days.
